The legend of the Baldknobbers lives on in Branson MO. Now the Ozarks features such shows as The
Baldnobbers Jamboree. The many legends and folktales told by the campfires and fireplaces all over
the Ozarks give reference to the story of the Baldknobbers.
The name Baldknobbers comes from a 1880s group of men, who banded together to take care of rustlers and
thieves when no law and order existed in the Ozarks. They would hold their secret meetings on top of
the treeless hills, or bald knobbs. Harold Bell Wright's play The Shepherd of the Hills portrays the
demise of the Baldknobbers vigilante group. Not only were they the FIRST show in this area, but also
the Baldknobbers were in the original cast of The Shepherd of the Hills play and were the first street
band at Silver Dollar City. One could say that they have done it all in Branson. Once the show started
to become too crowded, they moved to the old skating rink, which accommodated 600 people and converted
it into Branson's first theater. In 1968 they built the current theater on 76 Country Boulevard.
Now seating 1700 people making them not only the oldest show in Branson, but also still one of the
largest shows.
